The Metropolitan Museum of Art, which holds this print through the Alfred Stieglitz bequest, describes it as a poetic evocation of a high priestess of nature: a single figure gathered into the rock and weathered pine of the range itself. A year later Brigman became the only photographer west of the Mississippi elected to Fellowship in the Photo-Secession.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWhat makes it hold a wall is restraint. The tonal range is narrow and the composition leaves the figure room to breathe, so the image reads as atmosphere rather than subject, closer to a landscape than a portrait.
